Northumberland F.A. Retain Northern Counties Championship

Northumberland F.A's County Under 18's Youth Team confirmed their place atop of the Northern Counties Championship table with a 100% record still...

The usual slow start from Northumberland F.A. allowed Durham to take control of the game in a very flat first half, a fine save from Shaun MacDonald kept the score 0-0 at half time.

The start of the second half saw Northumberland F.A. playing the brighter football with a bit more purpose, but yet again Shaun MacDonald was called into action, tipping a header onto the crossbar the subsequent rebound was smashed against the post by the Durham striker, a certain let off for Northumberland F.A.

Jack Gurr for the visitors was a constant threat down the right, the winger had only just returned from the USA the evening before Saturday’s match, showing incredible work rate and a first-rate attitude to turn out for his County.

The game was tight until the introduction of Bobby Lee Taylor for Ryan Drane who was running on empty after playing a full away game for Gateshead Academy Friday afternoon. The tricky winger danced past four Durham players to slide a pass into Matty Briggs who coolly finished, lifting the ball over the diving keeper. Team Manager Rob Carr later revealed that Bobby had promised his coach a performance that would swing the tie in the hosts favour.

In a blow to Northumberland F.A. goal scorer Matty Briggs picked up an injury, he and the hard working Adam Bains were replaced with Jake Baker & 16 year old Lewis Xbieras, and both players acquitted themselves well, giving a bit more energy and looking bright on the ball, to help see out the game.

Credit goes to the Northumberland F.A.’s defence who were solid throughout and stood up to everything Durham F.A. could muster.
