Shankhouse won their second Scotts Les Todd Benevolent Bowl on Friday night, defeating Walker Central 3-0 over 90 minutes at Whitley Park.

Russell Ward opened the scoring on 25 minutes, giving Shankhouse a 1-0 lead going into the break. An early goal followed in the second half through Captain Kevin Westphal before Shankhouse put the game to bed in the 73rd minute with a spectacular Oliver Young goal.

The match kicked off with Walker Central having the better of the possession, creating many chances in the first 20 minutes with Shankhouse struggling to get going.

Despite the lack of chances, Shankhouse won a penalty on the 24th minute through an advantage played by the referee in which David Mason took the opportunity to run through the Walker defence and was subsequently taken down in the area. The game was then turned on its head when Russell Ward stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way.

After Walker Central’s top scorer Matthew Haydon failed to hit the target with a free header you could see that it just wasn’t going to be their day as they went into half-time a goal down.

An early goal from Shankhouse captain Kevin Westphal stuttered a chance of a Walker comeback in the second half. Walker Central ‘keeper Sean Korsbo had a moment to forget as Westphal’s tame effort slipped through his gloves and trickled into the back of the net.

Chances did come for Walker, however shouts for a penalty when Salim Abubaker hit the deck where quashed by referee Steve Lennon who booked Abubaker for simulation.

Jonathan Wright came on in the 52nd minute and proved a nuisance to the Shankhouse defence, forcing some great saves from ‘keeper Robert Joyce. Along with a header which was cleared off the line by Shankhouse defender Russell Ward, leaving Walker Central wondering what else they could do to force a goal to get back into the tie.

The final was sealed on the 73rd minute by Oliver Young who made the score 3-0 to Shankhouse; hitting the ball on the bounce from the edge of the area and lobbing ‘keeper Sean Korsbo to provoke a big cheer from the packed crowd at Whitley Park.

After four minutes of added time, Shankhouse held onto their clean sheet and were presented as 2017 Benevolent Bowl champions after a well-deserved victory.
