Futsal Week 5 Update
In the Women’s League, it was the final week of League Stage action before two weeks of play-offs to determine the winner. The night started with 2nd placed Blyth Town taking on league leaders, and University Futsal Champions, Team Northumbria. The winners would finish top and be guaranteed a place in the FA Futsal Cup. The first half was a close affair, with both sides’ defences proving too strong with neither side able to make the first breakthrough. The first goal finally came in the 2nd half with Blyth taking the lead and putting Team Northumbria behind for the first time in the competition. Team Northumbria stepped up a gear however and replied with high quality finishing taking the score to 4-1. Blyth pulled one back, but any potential comeback was halted with a 5th and final goal for Team Northumbria who secured 1st place in the League Phase, and with it a guaranteed spot in the FA Futsal Cup semi-finals event! Blyth will hope for a rematch on finals night in Week 7. In the other games, BHP United recorded their first victory with a 7-5 win over Newcastle East End A. Both BHP United and Newcastle Eat End A will take part in Week 6’s play-offs for a second chance to reach Finals Night. Cramlington Women secured their place in Week 7’s Finals Night with a 9-4 victory over Newcastle East End B.
In the Men’s League, Newcastle East End, of the Tyneside Amateur League, had the chance to secure the title and their place in the FA Futsal Cup in their game against 2nd placed Currys/PC World FC, of the Newcastle City Council Business League. Currys/PC World FC started in incredible fashion scoring 6 first half goals. Newcastle East End forced a number of saves and three goal line clearances, but were unable to trouble the scorer and went into the break 6-0 down. In the 2nd half East End finally made the breakthrough, but Currys/PC World FC were to strong and came out 8-3 winners. With only one game to go now in the Men’s League, Currys/PC World FC have 2 point cushion over East End. However, after receiving a yellow card and questioning some of the referee’s decision, Currys/PC World FC have fallen behind on the Respect Mark standings meaning a draw in the final week may not be enough. In the other game of the night we had a 7-6 thriller between Aye Gibb and Bishop. Aye Gibb won it after being 4-1 down at one point in the 2nd half. This means Aye Gibb and Bishop both have a chance of achieving 3rd position as we go into the final week.
